Certificate in Avalanche Safety and Snowsport Instructing (Ski) or (Snowboard): available through the Otago Polytechnic

This qualification is for experienced skiers with an interest in ski or snowboard instructing and safely riding the best lines possible in the backcountry. The programme focuses on understanding mountain snow and weather conditions, managing risk through appropriate decision making and safe mountain travel techniques. Navigation, handling emergency situations, radio communications and ski maintenance are also integral. The MSC Avalanche Stage I, NZSIA/SBINZ Level 1 and Level 2 Ski/Snowboard Instructor qualification may be completed within this programme.

Certificate in Ski Patrol: available through the Mountain Education Centre of New Zealand (MECNZ)

This popular programme is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to enter the Ski Patrol industry. It is held in high regard by the Heads of Ski patrol within New Zealand and includes a four week placement for students with a real ski patrol department. This is where students compound the skills learnt with their tutors and is probably one of the longest and most fun filled job interviews ever.

Certificate in CIMS: available through SARINZ

This course is designed to give those attending, an understanding of the Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS) - its structure, elements, procedures, roles and responsibilities, as applied to search and rescue in New Zealand. This includes the planning, intelligence, logistics, operations and control functions. While there is an emphasis on CIMS application to search and rescue the course has wider relevance to emergency response generally.

Certificate in PHEC: available through Horizons

This is the advanced outdoor first aid qualification recognised by New Zealand outdoor education and adventure tourism providers. During the 5-day programme the theory of medical emergencies and treatment is presented in an interactive and exciting manner.
